Well known for it's culinary uses, Basil essential oil is a very useful oil to have on standby to treat a number of issues. One of it's properties is as an expectorant so it can be used to ease the symptoms of a cold, Bronchitis and Whooping Cough etc.

Basil essential oil is also a natural insect repellant...critters hate it! Try putting a few drops in a diffuser or oil burner to help keep insects away. The aroma of Basil oil is warm and spicy and had smells a little like Liquorice. It can be used in massage to aid digestive issues, however it should not be applied directly to the skin. It should be blended with a carrier oil.

It is not normally used on it's own for massage therapy, but blended with other oils such as Bergamot, Lemon and Lavender oil. A massage with oils containing Basil oil is a wonderful tonic for aching, stiff and tired muscles and joints.
